The more popular social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter become, the more time people spend on each of these platforms. Social media addiction is quickly becoming common among this new era of technology. However, for all of the benefits social media provides, it seems as if there are some people out there that believe social media can actually be detrimental to one’s emotional health and stability. An infographic prepared by Fix.com investigated the impact social media has on our health and came up with some pretty interesting insights based on a study conducted by the University of Stanford.
- 50% of respondents indicate that social networks such as Facebook and Twitter negatively impacts their lives, creating self-esteem issues based on people within their respective networks sharing their accomplishments.
- 66% of respondents claim that is is difficult to either sleep or relax after spending time on social media platforms.
- 25% of respondents claim that they have had work or relationship issues due to online conflicts.
- Over 50% of respondents indicate that they have anxiety and worry when they are unable to access their Facebook or email accounts.
Interestingly enough, the infographic shows that if users spent 30% less time on social media platforms, they could have an extra seven hours per week to spend on other hobbies and activities such as exercising. While social media will not kill you, it is important to realize that spending too much time on any technology or hobby in particular can be detrimental to one’s mental (and potentially physical) health. Yours truly is an avid social media enthusiast, but even I will allow some time for reading, exercising, and spending time with friends/family to get away from the awesome world that is social media.
